This instruction is for the version 5 interface. You can switch your campaign to use version 5 by clicking the New Menu link in the footer, then Administration-> Settings and set the version to 5.  Or set only your user account to use version 5 by clicking New Menu, then your user profile image, then select version 5.  Log out and back in for the change to take effect.

Tags are a flexible feature that are used to add additional traits to voters and to categorize them.  Tags are called Groups in the old version of webElect, while other systems may call them lists, categories, labels, or similar.

Voters can be included OR excluded based on having a tag OR by someone else in their house having a tag.  This allows for micro-targeting, such as contacting only likely Republican primary voters that "Flies a Flag" at their house... or minimizing wasted efforts by removing voters that are a decided "Support" or "Opposed" member or entire houses where someone is tagged with "Do Not Contact".  Tags can also be used to save the results of complex queries, or the results of multiple queries, for ease of use of future targeting tasks.  For instance, create and populate a "Targeted Voter" tag and then future pulls (or pulls by other users) only need to select the "Targeted Voter" tag as criteria.

Tags are managed via Administration-> Tags and presented in a tree type structure for organization so related tags can be grouped under a parent tag. See all tags by clicking the expand header, or use the quick search input to find tags.  Tag names are displayed with the parent name when space is available, but often are only displayed on their own, so the tag name should be identifiable on its own. Tag names should be short but clear and can include descriptions to clarify what they identify or how they were populated. Sensitive tags can be named via code words only disclosed to those needing to know, so say, a lost walk packet doesn't reveal private information.  Tags can also be set to be displayed or hidden from the individual voters' profile pages and from walk & call lists, depending on the purpose and sensitivity of the tag.

While tags can be created for anything, you should limit your tags to only those that will identify useful information and/or that will yield enough members to be useful.  This may mean consolidating specific tags into a more general tag, such as "Cat Owner", "Dog Owner", "Bird Owner" to just "Has Pet".  Creating too many tags can inhibit users ability to work efficiently with them, so the value provided by a tag needs to outweigh its cost of contributing to clutter.  Tags can also be archived to get them out of the way without deleting the information they provide.

Tags can be linked to Constant Contact or MailChimp lists so adding a voter to that tag will populate the linked list in the email service provider if the voter has an email address.

Voters can be added to tags in multiple ways, both individually and in bulk.

They can be Individually added via:

  1. the voter lookup Tags profile page
    1. using the All Tags column
    2. using the Quick Add Tag
    3. Setting up Pinned Tags, which are useful if you are repeatedly adding voters to the same tags. You can Pin those tags to the Pinned Tags column so subsequent visits to the profile page gives quick access to those tags.
  2. the walk apps (and packet entry)
  3. the Phone Banking survey forms
  4. web sign-up forms

Bulk adds can be done via:

  1. Targeting Output (which also allows you to kick your selected voters out of a tag)
  2. VoterNumber import (copy and paste a column of voter numbers OR barcode scan voter numbers into the page)
  3. External lists without voter numbers can be run through our match process and returned with voter numbers to import
